In Appreciation

Smilegivers Annual Giving Leadership Donors and Volunteer Celebratory Reception was held
October 19 at the Plan B Wine Cellars in Ventura. Smilegivers programs of the Santa Barbara-Ventura Counties Dental Care Foundation have touched the lives of over 12,000 children in the school year 2015-2016. We would not be able to accomplish this without YOUR support. These children were helped because you volunteer YOUR time, expertise and treasure. The children and their parents say “THANK YOU” and we are passing this appreciation along to you. This event expresses our appreciation for all YOUR support.

Plan B Wine Cellars is a working winery whose facility has both an outdoor presentation area and an indoor tasting room. Attendees were treated to tasting many of the fine red wines created at this facility while surrounded by aging wine barrels for next years wine. Everyone enjoyed an evening of fun, conversation and discovery. You may recognize many of the attendees in the photos. We look forward to your joining us next year!

We thank all those who volunteered -
without them this would never
have been such a success.
And 1,884 of our neighbors
would not have received

Foundation honors outstanding volunteers

At our annual appreciation reception for leadership donors and volunteers, the Dental Care Foundation was proud to recognize two professionals who are dedicated to serving their communities.

Volunteer Dentist of the Year, Dr. Robert Valdez, was recognized for his many years of service.

Valdez, who has practiced general dentistry in Oxnard since 1982, has been the "adopted dentist" for two elementary schools in Port Hueneme for more than 20 years, screening more than 500 children each year. He has been the most frequent volunteer at the Juvenile Justice Center Dental Clinic for many years, providing care to incarcerated youth and has volunteered at the Salvation Army Clinic. He also volunteers to treat children in the Foundation's Mobile Clinic several times each year. Valdez and hygienist wife Barbara recently completed their second dental mission trip to Guatemala.

When asked why he volunteers, Dr. Valdez remarked that he came from a humble background. “Along the way I was either a part of a socioeconomically deprived part of our population or was in a great position to observe it. When I run across those less fortunate than me, I feel I can relate to them. Helping others makes me feel good. A part of me also feels that we need to give back to the community that supports us and makes our livelihoods possible. It doesn't take much to help others. Doing a dental screening or working on incarcerated youths might take 2-3 hours of your free time. In the long run that isn't much, but it can be extremely important for those that we give our services to. I believe in Karma. You receive what you give."

"I have so many memories of some of those that I have helped. Some are hilarious and some are heartbreaking. When I'm finally done with dentistry, those are the stories I will appreciate the most.”

Dr. Mehravar Brown was presented with a special award of appreciation. Brown has been with the Dental Care Foundation for over 10 years. Two days each week she screens children and adults at preschools, elementary and middle schools, and at WIC sites. She provides diagnosis and treatment for children with no access to oral health care in the Mobile Dental Clinic. With a staff of two, she treats children and adults in this "mobile" dental office containing state-of-the-art dental equipment.

With amazing patience in working with children, Dr. Brown focuses on home care instruction for the whole family, making a difference in the lives of those without access to oral health care. Her continued support of the mission of the Dental Care Foundation truly gives her "Smile Givers Hero" status!

Thanks to All of our Donors!

For the year 2014, programs of the Dental Care Foundation touched the lives of more than 13,000 children and adults in both Santa Barbara County and Ventura Counties.

Services provided include oral health screening, fluoride varnish applications, and oral health education programs. Children with no access to oral health care received exams with radiographs, cleaning, sealants, fillings and simple extractions. These services had an equivalent value of more than $2.5 million.

All of our Smile Givers programs exist and are sustained over time only from donations from individuals, renewing their support by giving through our annual giving campaign, which has now been launched for 2015-16.

To honor our annual giving leadership donors (giving at the $500 level or higher), a reception is held in October, at the rooftop lounge of the Watermark in Ventura. Thanks to all who have already rewewed their commitment by volunteering and making an annual gift to the Foundation! Please join them...(also consider increasing your donor level so we can celebrate your leadership support at our reception in 2016!)
